Collection: Overcoats

The long coat, in the cloth it was meant to be cut from.

The cuts have names worth knowing. A balmacaan is the loose, raglan-sleeved, single-breasted coat with a short turnover collar, made to go over a suit. A swing or cocoon coat takes its shape from the hem rather than the waist. Double-breasted and peak-lapel coats hold a formal line. Beneath the cut sits the cloth: pure cashmere, superfine and brushed wool, herringbone and tweed, camel, and occasionally llama.

Many pieces carry two names, and they mean different things. Loro Piana, Fratelli Piacenza, Colombo and Zegna are mills — they weave the cloth. Canali, Pal Zileri, Schneiders and Windsor are makers — they cut and construct the coat. A label can honestly carry both.

Each coat here is one of one. When it is gone, it is gone.
