The patterns are the vocabulary. Prince of Wales is the large glen check, often carrying a faint overcheck in a second colour. Houndstooth is the broken, pointed check that reads as pattern at a distance and as texture up close. Gingham is the even, open square. Herringbone is a woven V rather than a printed motif, which is why it holds up as a neutral. Alongside them sit velvet, corduroy, jacquard and pure silk.
As with the overcoats, two names often sit on one label — the maker who cut the jacket, and the mill that wove the cloth.
