How to Find a Good Furrier, and What to Ask Before a Repair
The short answer
Look for a furrier, not a dry cleaner: a specialist whose workroom repairs, cleans and stores real fur. Start with a trade association's member list, such as the American Fur Council's Authorized Furcare Specialists or the British Fur Trade Association's members, then judge the shop itself. A good furrier inspects the leather side before quoting, puts the work, price and storage terms in writing, and tells you plainly when a coat isn't worth repairing.

Whether the coat comes from our vintage fur coat archive or from a family wardrobe, the right furrier can keep it going for decades; the wrong one can finish it.
Furrier or dry cleaner?
A fur coat is tanned skin with hair on it, and the skin is the part that keeps it alive. Ordinary dry cleaning is made for fabric. The American Fur Council advises cleaning by a fur specialist instead, a process that cleans the hair and puts oils back into the hair and the leather. Our guide to cleaning and storing a fur coat explains why. Repairs are different again: they are made from the inside, under the lining, by someone who can match and sew pelts.
Some dry cleaners advertise fur cleaning and send the coats on to a fur specialist. That can be fine, but ask where your coat will actually go.
Where to find one
- United States. The American Fur Council runs the Authorized Furcare Specialist programme through its consumer site, furcare.org, a licensing programme with a list of specialists.
- United Kingdom. The British Fur Trade Association publishes a list of its members. Between them they offer specialist repairs, cleaning, storage, remodelling and valuations.
- Elsewhere. The International Fur Federation lists its member associations country by country. The national body is usually the quickest route to a local workroom.
- Greece. Kastoria in the north-west has been a fur-working town for centuries. The Hellenic Fur Federation and the Kastoria furriers' association have profiles on greekfur.gr, the Greek fur trade's site.
Membership of a trade body is a good lead, not a guarantee. What matters is how the shop handles your coat.
Questions to ask before you hand over a coat
1. Will you look at the leather side first? A sound repair depends on the skin, not the hair. A good furrier checks how supple the leather is, often by opening part of the lining at the hem, before recommending any work.
2. Who does the work, and where? In-house, or sent to another workroom? Sending work out is normal; not being told is not.
3. Can I have an itemised quote in writing? Ask what is included, what could change once the coat is opened, and whether they will ask your approval before doing anything extra.
4. What happens to the lining, the closures and the labels? If the coat has a furrier's label or an embroidered monogram, ask for it to be kept. It is part of the coat's history, and often part of its value.
5. Where will it be stored? For cold storage, ask whether the vault is on site and how it is controlled. The American Fur Council's guideline is 34–45°F (about 1–7°C) with humidity held between 45 and 55%.
6. What value goes on the receipt, and what does your insurance cover? Know the liability limit before you leave the coat, and check your own home insurance too.
7. When will it be ready, and what will the receipt record? The intake receipt should describe the coat and its condition, the agreed work and the price. Take your own photographs at the counter.
Red flags
- A price for repair before anyone has looked at the skin.
- No written quote, or no clear answer about storage conditions and insurance.
- Vague answers about who does the work and where the coat goes.
- Pressure to approve an expensive remodel on the spot.
- A promise that a brittle, splitting coat can definitely be saved.
What furrier work costs
Prices vary with the fur, the length of the coat, its condition and the city. These are published starting prices from two furriers' own price lists, seen in October 2026. They are examples to help you budget, not a quote.
| Service | Published examples (approx., Oct 2026) |
|---|---|
| Cleaning | From $99 for cleaning and glazing a jacket or stole (Colorado, US); £150 for mink, £250 for sable or chinchilla, plus VAT (UK) |
| Cold storage | From $99 a season (US); £90 for six months or £160 for a year, plus VAT (UK) |
| Relining | From $495 for a coat, $395 for a jacket (US) |
| Shortening sleeves | From $175 for straight sleeves (US) |
Repairs to the pelts themselves are almost always quoted after inspection, because the work depends on what the furrier finds under the lining.
When a repair isn't worth it
If the hair comes out in tufts, or the skin feels papery and tears across the pelts rather than along the seams, the leather has dried out, and stitches will simply pull through. An honest furrier will tell you so. Our guide to whether an old fur coat can be restored shows how to check before you pay for anything. And if the coat fits badly but the skin is sound, a furrier can often fix that too; see how a vintage fur coat should fit.
Common questions
How do I find a good furrier near me?
Start with a trade association: in the US the American Fur Council's Authorized Furcare Specialist programme (furcare.org), in the UK the British Fur Trade Association's list of members, and elsewhere the International Fur Federation's list of national associations. Then judge the shop by how it handles your coat.
Can a dry cleaner clean a fur coat?
Not an ordinary one. Dry cleaning is made for fabric. The American Fur Council advises cleaning by a fur specialist, a process that cleans the hair and puts oils back into the hair and the leather. Some dry cleaners send fur on to a specialist, so ask where your coat will go.
What should I ask a furrier before a repair?
Ask whether they will inspect the leather side first, who does the work and where, for an itemised written quote, what happens to the lining, closures and labels, where the coat will be stored, what value goes on the receipt and what insurance covers, and when it will be ready.
How much does fur coat cleaning and storage cost?
As a guide, published prices seen in October 2026 started at about $99 for cleaning and glazing a jacket and $99 a season for cold storage in the US, and £150 for cleaning a mink and £90 for six months' storage, plus VAT, in the UK. Prices vary with the fur, the coat and the city.
When is a fur coat not worth repairing?
When the skin has dried out: hair comes out in tufts, the leather feels papery, and tears run across the pelts rather than along the seams. Stitches pull through dry skin, and an honest furrier will tell you so.
