Cashmere

Cashmere, and cashmere blended with wool — from the archive.

The word covers a wide range, so it helps to read the label closely. Pure cashmere is the whole cloth; cashmere and wool is a blend, and often the more practical coat, since wool adds structure and resilience that pure cashmere trades away for softness. Camel hair sits alongside both as a noble fibre in its own right.

Some pieces name the mill rather than the maker. Piacenza Alashan and supercashmere refer to specific grades of fibre; Colombo Borgosesia and Loro Piana are the houses that spun and wove it. A coat can carry the mill's name on the cloth and the tailor's on the collar.

What separates one cashmere coat from another is fibre length, fineness and ply — not the word on the label. Read The Cashmere Story for how those are graded.

Vintage cashmere coats, answered

Is a vintage cashmere coat worth it?

Often, yes, because vintage narrows the price gap. New cashmere coats at department stores commonly cost about $1,500 to $4,000 (October 2026), while most pure cashmere coats here cost a fraction of that. Before you buy, check the fibre label, look for thinning under the arms and at the cuffs, and hold the cloth to the light for moth holes.

How can I tell if a coat is 100% cashmere?

Read the fibre-content label: it should say 100% cashmere or pure cashmere. Under US rules, only the fine, dehaired undercoat of the cashmere goat, averaging 19 microns or less, may be called cashmere, and a blend must state each fibre's percentage. A mill name such as Loro Piana, Colombo or Piacenza tells you who wove the cloth, not how much cashmere is in it. Softness alone is not proof, because a fine merino can feel close to cashmere.

Pure cashmere or cashmere and wool?

Pure cashmere is softer and gives more warmth for its weight. A cashmere-and-wool blend is harder wearing and pills less, because sheep's wool is the tougher fibre. For warmth, the weight and density of the cloth matter more than the fibre's name. A coat labelled 90% wool and 10% cashmere is mostly a wool coat. More in Cashmere vs Wool.

How much does a vintage cashmere coat cost?

Here, in October 2026: cashmere-and-wool coats mostly about €150–250, pure cashmere coats about €195–450, and pure cashmere blazers about €155–400. A few coats in Loro Piana cloth, bespoke or by a major designer reach about €550. Each piece is one of one, so the price is for that coat alone.

Do you have men's and women's cashmere coats?

Both. The men's side runs from overcoats, balmacaans and double-breasted coats to blazers; the women's from belted and swing coats to cocoon and maxi coats. Each listing gives the size and the fit, and we can send measurements through the chat.

Does a cashmere coat pill, and how do I care for it?

Some pilling under the arms, at the cuffs and around the pockets is normal: cashmere is a short, very fine fibre, and the pills brush off with a cashmere brush or a fabric comb. Thin, shiny or bare patches are wear, not pilling. Brush the coat after wearing, rest it on a broad hanger and store it clean. Step by step: how to clean a cashmere coat.
