Vintage Shearling & Sheepskin Coats – Page 2

Vintage shearling and sheepskin coats: sheepskin tanned with the fleece still attached, one skin doing two jobs, the leather facing out or in depending on the cut.

The Vestiaire runs across the recognisable shapes. Penny Lane and Afghan coats are the embroidered, fur-trimmed 1970s cut, worn open. Aviator and flight styles are the short, heavy, collar-up shape built for cold rather than for line. Maxi, swing and cocoon coats use the fleece for volume. Where a piece is named for entrefino or lambskin, that is the breed or the skin rather than the silhouette — and suede shearling is the same hide finished on the nap.

Both genuine shearling and faux shearling sit under this heading, and they age differently. Real fleece is a skin, so it stiffens and dries like leather if it is stored badly. A faux pile is a textile: it mats and pills instead. Our guide to how to clean a shearling coat covers spills, rain and storage.

Each coat here is one of one. When it is gone, it is gone.

What is the difference between shearling and sheepskin?

Both describe a sheep or lamb skin tanned with the wool left on. Sheepskin is the broader word for any sheep hide; shearling is the word most often used for a skin with a short, even fleece, worn as a coat. Shearling vs sheepskin explains the labels, including mouton and entrefino.

How much does a vintage shearling coat cost?

Most shearling and sheepskin coats in the Vestiaire are priced between about €115 and €270 (October 2026), with longer and rarer pieces above that. Each is one of one, with its condition described in the listing.

How do I clean a vintage shearling coat?

Spot-clean marks, let a wet coat dry slowly at room temperature away from radiators, and leave deeper cleaning to a leather and sheepskin specialist rather than an ordinary dry cleaner. Step by step: how to clean a shearling coat.

How can I tell if a vintage shearling coat is real?

Every listing here says which. Part the fleece at a cuff or hem: on real shearling the wool grows out of the skin, and the other side is suede or leather in one piece. A knitted or woven backing means faux shearling or sherpa. The five-minute check is in is my shearling coat real?

What is a Penny Lane coat?
