Boiled wool from the Alps — the cloth that made a coat weatherproof before anything was coated.
Loden is fulled and milled until the fibres close on themselves, which is why it sheds rain and cuts wind without a membrane. Tiroler loden names the Tyrolean tradition; Moessmer (South Tyrol, est. 1894) and Loden Frey München are among the mills that made it. Many pieces run loden with alpaca or mohair, which adds lustre and drape to a cloth that is otherwise all substance.
The shapes are the traditional ones: long overcoats, capes and the walking coat with a back vent and shoulder yoke.
Each coat here is one of one. When it is gone, it is gone.
