The company was founded in Metzingen in 1924 by Hugo Ferdinand Boss as a clothing manufacturer. In the decades after the Second World War it moved into men’s suits, and from the later 20th century became one of the best-known names in modern, sharp-lined tailoring.
As a maker, Boss cuts and constructs the garment; the cloth is woven by mills. Its identity is contemporary, clean suiting rather than heritage sartorial softness.

Who made it, and who wove it.
As a tailoring house, Boss cuts and constructs the garment — the cloth itself is often woven by a specialist mill. A “Boss coat in Loro Piana cloth” means Boss made the coat and Loro Piana wove the fabric: two different kinds of excellence, both worth knowing.
