Cashmere

Cashmere comes from the fine undercoat of the Capra hircus goat - not the outer fleece, not a blend. Harvested once a year in spring, hand-combed as the goat sheds naturally. One animal yields 150 to 200 grams of raw fibre. After de-hairing, the usable weight reduces by up to 80%. Three to four goats for a sweater. More for a coat.

The name comes from Kashmir, where Sultan Zayn-ul-Abidin invited master weavers from Turkistan in the 15th century to establish the shawl industry. The kani shawl - woven with tiny wooden bobbins, guided by a coded pattern called a talim - could take months or years to complete. A single shawl required hundreds of bobbins and advanced only a few inches a day. These were not garments. They were the highest textile craft the world had produced.

The Kashmir shawl reached Europe through Napoleon's Egyptian campaign of 1798. His officers brought them home as war souvenirs, wearing them as belts. Napoleon gifted one to Josephine. Her first response, written in a letter to her son: the shawls seemed ugly to her, and she doubted the fashion would last. Within a few years she was spending 20,000 gold francs for a single piece. Her collection at the Chateau de Navarre numbered between 150 and 400 shawls. Napoleon, it was said, never wished to see the same one twice on her shoulders - and on more than one occasion tore a repeated shawl from her and threw it in the fire. She simply bought another.

The demand she created was impossible to meet. Manufacturers in Paisley responded with Jacquard-loom imitations in silk and sheep wool. The boteh motif became the paisley pattern. The name of the town replaced the name of the fibre. Today most cashmere originates in Inner Mongolia and China, where goats endure winters to -40 degrees C at altitudes of 4,000 metres. The cold is not incidental. It is the reason.

Grade A fibre measures 14 to 15.5 microns - roughly one sixth the width of a human hair - with a minimum length of 36mm. Longer fibres resist pilling and hold shape across years of wear. Most commercial production uses Grade B: 16 to 19 microns, shorter fibres. Softer than wool. Not what Grade A is.

Cashmere is hygroscopic - it absorbs up to 30% of its weight in moisture without feeling damp, and releases it as conditions change. In cold, the hollow fibre traps warm air. In warmth, heat escapes. It does not overheat. It does not chill. It responds to the body wearing it.

Good cashmere does not deteriorate. It improves. Pilling in the first few wears is the short surface fibres settling - not a flaw. Wash in cool water, fold to dry, store with cedar. It grows softer each season. The first cashmere products ever made were socks, presented to the Sultan of Kashmir in the 14th century. Even then, people understood it was worth the effort.

Cheap cashmere is a recent invention. Until the 1990s, Mongolia and China exported raw fibre, not finished garments. The mass-market cashmere of the past thirty years - blended, short-fibred, inconsistently de-haired - is not the same material. A label reading 100% cashmere tells only part of the story. The rest is micron count, fibre length, de-hairing standard, and mill.

When we select cashmere for the vestiaire, we are reading all of this. The density of the weave. The way the cloth falls. The softness that only comes from long-fibre, correctly processed material. Vintage cashmere from European mills of the 1960s through the 1980s - Scottish, Italian, Japanese - was made to a standard current production rarely reaches. The pieces that pass are built to last. The cold did its part. The mill did its part. Now it is ours.
